The Puma Women's Soccer team opened its 2025 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory on the road against NAIA opponent Nelson University on Saturday evening at CCV Field.

Despite conceding the opening goal in the 25th minute, the Pumas responded with composure and confidence. Just three minutes later, Mercedez Gallegos converted a penalty kick to equalize the match, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

In the second half, the Pumas took control. Mia Acuna netted the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Gallegos. The scoring was capped in the 65th minute when Nevaeh Villegas finished a play assisted by Karely Quinonez, sealing the 3-1 victory.

"I was proud of how the ladies stayed composed after falling behind in the first half," said Head Coach Ernie Santa Cruz. "We quickly responded, scoring a goal to tie the match up a few minutes later. In the second half, we stayed with our game plan and controlled the pace of the match, ultimately ending with a positive result."

Defensively, the Pumas held Nelson to a single shot on goal, which was the lone goal of the match. Goalkeeper Sydney King played the full 90 minutes to earn the win.

The Pumas start at 1-0-0 and will look to carry the momentum forward.
