Men's Soccer faced a tough road test Wednesday night, falling 5-0 to the NJCAA #1 Phoenix College. The match started in challenging fashion, with the Pumas conceding a goal in the opening minute, a difficult way to begin any match, let alone against the top team in the country.
"We know how hard it is to go down a goal that early, especially when you're facing the number one team in the country," said Head Coach Christian DeVries. "But I'm proud of the way our guys continued to compete. We still control our own destiny, and this experience will serve as a stepping stone for our growth and development."
The Bears added three more goals in the first half, extending their lead to 4-0 at the break. They would later add the fifth goal early in the second half to seal the result.
"I've challenged the guys to take the lessons learned from this game and mentally prepare for what will be another battle against a top team," added DeVries. "This is the kind of stretch that tests you as well as it builds you."
With the loss, PVCC is now 1-2-1 in conference play. The Pumas now shift focus to another challenging road match as they travel to Tucson on Saturday to take on NJCAA #7 Pima Community College. Kickoff is set for 8:00pm.
